‘A better life for our children’
Ernesto Martinez, fanning an infant with a piece of cardboard.
When asked how old the baby was, Martinez answered: 24 days.
He and his wife, 23-year-old Yesenia, joined the caravan in Tapachula, their baby was just 17 days old. They were also travelling with their two other daughters, 6-year-old Natalie, and 4-year-old Lynsi.
They made the decision to join the caravan after seeing that it was going to pass through Guatemala, their home country.
Martinez said he had pushed his daughter in a stroller all the way through Chiapas. He planned to push her the rest of the way to a better life, in the United States.
Many Central American migrants live in violent neighborhoods that are overrun by:
- GANG VIOLENCE
- ORGANIZED CRIME
- CHILD ABUSE
- SEX TRAFFICKING
- DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
- ABANDONMENT
- DEATH OF PARENTS
- LABOR EXPLOITATION
- CORRUPTION
- POVERTY
With no one to protect them, they see only one option: to run for their lives.
