Volcanic Eruptions Reduce Flow Of Major Rivers: A 2015 study found that major volcanic eruptions can significantly impact the flow of the world’s largest rivers. The study used computer models to predict where rivers would be affected by eruptions. The researchers found that some rivers experienced reduced flow a year or two after an eruption. For example, the Amazon and Nile rivers decreased in flow by about 10 percent after major eruptions.
The results of their study showed that volcanic eruptions can promote less rain and lower flows in some regions, while encouraging heavier rains and higher flows in others.
Volcanic Eruptions Reduce Flow Of Major Rivers
In tropical regions, eruptions were followed by one to two years of reduced river flow. The estimated that that the Amazon and the Nile would drop in volume by about 10 percent for two years after a volcanic eruption.
